Modernstone
Retaining Wall, Fig Tree Pocket, 2024
Built with Modernstone blocks by National Masonry, this curved retaining wall adds structure with sharp, clean lines and a modern edge. It cuts neatly through the slope, grounding the landscape without overpowering it.

Set against a backdrop of tall gums and dappled shade, this curved retaining wall brings a crisp, contemporary line to a natural bush setting. Built using Modernstone blocks by National Masonry, the design strikes a balance between bold geometry and subtle integration—holding back the earth while still feeling part of the landscape. The dark charcoal tone anchors the space visually, creating contrast against the surrounding greenery and mulch.
The layout follows the land’s natural contours, curving smoothly along the edge of the garden without interrupting its flow. Careful stepping and precise block alignment give the wall its clean, sculptural quality—no fuss, no visual clutter. Integrated planting pockets and natural timber mulch soften the hardscape, blending the built elements with the existing vegetation.
Functionally, the wall resolves a tricky sloped yard, creating usable space and protecting the garden from erosion. It also guides movement through the site, framing a gentle pathway and leading the eye along its arc. The modular block system allows for both strength and consistency in finish, while the wide top course provides the flexibility for seating or future planting.
This is a practical solution delivered with clarity and intent. Instead of trying to hide the wall, the design embraces it—using texture, form, and material choice to enhance the space rather than dominate it. It’s a reminder that retaining walls can be more than just structural—they can define how a garden feels, moves, and grows.
